Here is a short Baber family history that was posted online:
John Corbin Baber and Sarah Rosetta Pierson Baber were both born in Ohio and lived in and around Elida [Lima Ohio / Allen County] their entire lives with the exception of the years 1920 to 1923. They were the parents of nine children, all of whom lived to adulthood.
John Corbin was a very large man standing well over 6 feet and weighing about 212 pounds. For all his size he is remembered by his grandchildren as being a gentle loving man. Both Sarah and John Corbin are remembered fondly by their grandchildren and they have many stories to tell of family get-togethers during the years.
John Corbin worked at the tile mill in Elida, Ohio, and laid drainage tile in the farm fields. He then started his own cement block plant in a small house in Elida just across the street from the large family home.
After he closed his cement block factory, the small house was remodeled and Sarah moved into this small house following the death of her husband.
From 1920 through 1923 the family lived in Bluffton, Indiana and John Corbin worked in the piano factory there.
Following the family’s return to Elida, John Corbin worked in the local lumber yard.
He had a working shop in his garage and was a very accomplished craftsman. He made several pieces of furniture which are still in the family, including a chair which his niece, Anna, had at her home. The chair is extremely light weight but very sturdy as this was John Corbin’s chair which he used at the family table.
John Corbin made cabinets in his shop and designed and built the first rolling cabinet doors. He tapered the thin strips of wood and glued them to muslin cloth so they would roll. Although he used this rolling door in the cabinets he built, he never thought to secure a patent on his invention.
John bought his first horseless carriage in 1917. He did not drive so his daughter Levina drove the car for them. He made a wooden toolbox for the car.
John Corbin Baber passed away following a brief Illness in November 1929. It has been assumed that the cause of death was gallbladder. -- Source: FamilySearch
