The Show Must Go On, Baby!

The new Antique Trader's Newsletter asks the question: Is ebay still relevant? I'd say, yes, of course, but it is just a part of the antiques scene. You know the old saying, "Don't keep all your eggs in one basket"-- diversify, diversify, diversify. Antiques malls and stores, live auctions, and shows are still a viable and strong aspect of the biz.

I've been giving antiques SHOWS a lot of thought lately, especially after some recent great experiences. For a long while, shows seemed on a down-trend. All one heard was "Everyone's putting their good stuff on ebay", and fewer dealers were setting up at shows. Most of the shows I attended had an off-feel. But now, I'm seeing fewer empty dealer-spaces, and definitely getting a MUCH better vibe from everyone I talk to at the shows. So, I say, they're back, baby!

In January we went to the Fruit Jar Show in Muncie. That was so much fun! There was a huge turnout. The meeting/get-together at the hotel was SRO! This show is a little unusual as it is really a many-day event, with everyone staying at a near-by hotel, and room-hopping and visiting before the day of the actual show. There's even an auction. So many people were saying "This is like the old days!". Check out their website for pix of the show. Fruit jars as far as the eye could see. The next one is in July-- can't wait!

Now, get thee to a show...
